Exports by Country
The Netherlands (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons) were the main destinations of camel and other animal meat exports from South Africa, with a combined 73% share of total exports. Namibia, France, Italy, Lesotho, Qatar and Mozambique lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by France (with a CAGR of +125.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the key foreign market for meat of camels and other animals exports from South Africa, comprising 50% of total exports. In 2022, overseas purchases of meat of camels and other animals increased by 14% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a sharp decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 169%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, camel and other animal meat imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a precipitous decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 288%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Namibia (X tons) was the main camel and other animal meat supplier to South Africa, accounting for a approx. 100% share of total imports.
