Imports into South Africa
In 2022, overseas purchases of mushrooms and truffles decreased by -48.5% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports saw a dramatic setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 740% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, mushroom and truffle imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 554%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, France (X tons) constituted the largest mushroom and truffle supplier to South Africa, with a 55% share of total imports. Moreover, mushroom and truffle imports from France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by China (X kg), with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from France totaled +18.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+2.6% per year) and China (-40.3% per year).
In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of mushrooms and truffles to South Africa, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 15% share.
