Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 23%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, overseas purchases of natural sands increased by 25% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, showed a pronounced decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 78% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, natural sand imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 40%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Turkey (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of natural sand to South Africa, accounting for a 84% share of total imports. Moreover, natural sand imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Egypt (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Belgium (X tons), with a 4.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Turkey stood at -1.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (-39.8% per year) and Belgium (+0.6% per year).
In value terms, Turkey ($X) constituted the largest supplier of natural sand to South Africa, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 3.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Turkey stood at -5.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (-13.9% per year) and Belgium (-10.4% per year).
