In 2022, exports of nonwoven fabrics from South Africa shrank dramatically to X tons, waning by -22.3% on the previous year's figure. Overall, total exports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then plummeted in the following year.

In value terms, nonwoven fabric exports shrank significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 27%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then declined sharply in the following year.

The UK (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of nonwoven fabric exports from South Africa, together comprising 58% of total exports. Ghana, the Czech Republic, Angola, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Nigeria, Mozambique, Madagascar, Tanzania and Botswana lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +89.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the UK ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Germany ($X) constituted the largest markets for nonwoven fabric exported from South Africa worldwide, together accounting for 62% of total exports. The Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +71.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average nonwoven fabric export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 6.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 14% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Botswana (+5.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the amount of nonwoven fabrics imported into South Africa declined to X tons, with a decrease of -8.6% compared with 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, nonwoven fabric imports fell to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 28%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest nonwoven fabric supplier to South Africa, with a 41% share of total imports. Moreover, nonwoven fabric imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Czech Republic (X tons), twofold. Turkey, Spain, Italy, Egypt, Brazil, Australia, India, Israel and Saudi Arabia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Australia, with a CAGR of +46.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average nonwoven fabric import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 4.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 5.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
