Mozambique (X cubic meters) was the main destination for oxygen exports from South Africa, with a 37% share of total exports. Moreover, oxygen exports to Mozambique exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Botswana (X cubic meters), twofold. Kenya (X cubic meters) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Mozambique stood at +4.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Botswana (-2.3% per year) and Kenya (+17.8% per year).
In value terms, Mozambique ($X) remains the key foreign market for oxygen exports from South Africa, comprising 37% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Botswana ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 9.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Mozambique totaled +6.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Botswana (-0.6% per year) and Kenya (+19.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average oxygen export price stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 29%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Namibia ($X per cubic meter) and Botswana ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Zambia ($X per cubic meter) and Mozambique ($X per cubic meter) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Namibia (+1.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into South Africa
In 2022, purchases abroad of oxygen was finally on the rise to reach X cubic meters for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 47%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X cubic meters. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, oxygen imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 74% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Germany (X cubic meters) constituted the largest supplier of oxygen to South Africa, with a 61% share of total imports. Moreover, oxygen imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X cubic meters), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Italy (X cubic meters), with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany amounted to -10.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+31.0% per year) and Italy (-19.7% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of oxygen to South Africa, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Germany was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+39.7% per year) and Italy (-10.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average oxygen import price amounted to $X per cubic meter, falling by -8.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 41% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per cubic meter, and then contracted in the following year.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were the United States ($X per cubic meter) and Italy ($X per cubic meter), while the price for Germany ($X per cubic meter) and Angola ($X per cubic meter) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+13.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
