Drawing Chalk Market Size in South Africa

After two years of decline, the South African drawing chalk market increased by 21% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Drawing chalk consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 19% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, drawing chalk exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a noticeable setback. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Namibia (X units) was the main destination for drawing chalk exports from South Africa, accounting for a 42% share of total exports. Moreover, drawing chalk exports to Namibia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Botswana (X units), fourfold. Swaziland (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Namibia totaled +1.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Botswana (-10.3% per year) and Swaziland (+1.7% per year).

In value terms, Namibia ($X) remains the key foreign market for pastels, drawing charcoals, writing or drawing chalks exports from South Africa, comprising 38% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Botswana ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Swaziland, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Namibia was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Botswana (-2.8% per year) and Swaziland (+0.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average drawing chalk export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, surging by 16% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 23%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Malawi ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zimbabwe (+13.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into South Africa

In 2021, the amount of pastels, drawing charcoals, writing or drawing chalks imported into South Africa soared to X units, with an increase of 23% against the year before. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 32%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, drawing chalk imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

China (X units), Thailand (X units) and South Korea (X units) were the main suppliers of drawing chalk imports to South Africa, with a combined 99% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Thailand (with a CAGR of +5.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of pastels, drawing charcoals, writing or drawing chalks to South Africa, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 17% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (+11.2% per year) and South Korea (+2.5% per year).
