After two years of growth, the South African pineapple market decreased by -3% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Pineapple consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Swaziland, France, Lesotho, the Netherlands, Germany, Ethiopia, Kuwait, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Saudi Arabia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Ethiopia (with a CAGR of +42.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for pineapple exported from South Africa were Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and France ($X), together accounting for 46% of total exports. In 2022, the average pineapple export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 32%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kuwait (+17.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, imports, however, posted strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 253% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then fell dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, pineapple imports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 91%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Mozambique (X tons) constituted the largest pineapple supplier to South Africa, accounting for a 85% share of total imports. Moreover, pineapple imports from Mozambique exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Thailand (X tons), sixfold.
