In 2022, the South African market for plastic or non-precious metal watches increased by 22% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after five years of decline. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Namibia (X units) was the main destination for plastic or non-precious metal watch exports from South Africa, accounting for a 47% share of total exports. Moreover, plastic or non-precious metal watch exports to Namibia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Botswana (X units), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Swaziland (X units), with an 8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Namibia stood at +16.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Botswana (+12.9% per year) and Swaziland (+35.2% per year).

Malawi, with a CAGR of +13.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for plastic or non-precious metal watches stood at $X per unit in 2022, picking up by 46% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, plastic or non-precious metal watch imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 36% against the previous year.
