In value terms, polyethylene glycol and polyether exports declined to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 115%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Zambia (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) were the main destinations of polyethylene glycol and polyether exports from South Africa, with a combined 57% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Nigeria, Ghana, Namibia, Angola, Malawi, Tanzania, Swaziland, Benin, Botswana and Mozambique, which together accounted for a further 35%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Benin (with a CAGR of +20.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Zambia ($X), Zimbabwe ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) constituted the largest markets for polyethylene glycol and polyether exported from South Africa worldwide, with a combined 60% share of total exports. The average polyethylene glycol and polyether export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 13% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a slight reduction. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malawi ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, polyethylene glycol and polyether imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
