In 2022, overseas purchases of polyvinyl chloride increased by 22% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, polyvinyl chloride imports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports posted a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 151%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

China (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) were the main suppliers of polyvinyl chloride imports to South Africa, with a combined 59% share of total imports. Germany, Belgium, Mexico, Spain, the United States, France and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.
