In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the South African primary cell and battery market, when its value decreased by -9.8% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Primary cell and battery consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Mozambique (X units), Botswana (X units) and Namibia (X units) were the main destinations of primary cell and battery exports from South Africa, together comprising 61% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of -0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, Botswana ($X), Namibia ($X) and Swaziland ($X) were the largest markets for primary cell and battery exported from South Africa worldwide, together accounting for 53% of total exports. Mozambique, Lesotho, Zambia, Malawi and Angola lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.
Malawi, with a CAGR of +2.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.
Export Prices by Country
The average primary cell and battery export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, reducing by -1.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 87%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit, and then fell modestly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Mozambique ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Botswana (+21.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, primary cell and battery imports declined slightly to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of primary cells and batteries to South Africa, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (-8.0% per year) and Singapore (-3.0% per year).

The average primary cell and battery import price stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of 27% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per unit), while the price for Singapore ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
