The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, non-decaffeinated roasted coffee exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +89.1% against 2016 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Botswana (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) were the main destinations of non-decaffeinated roasted coffee exports from South Africa, with a combined 84% share of total exports.

For the third year in a row, South Africa recorded decline in overseas purchases of roasted coffee (not decaffeinated), which decreased by -26.6% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a pronounced setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 19%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-decaffeinated roasted coffee imports amounted to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Italy (X tons), Switzerland (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of non-decaffeinated roasted coffee imports to South Africa, together accounting for 68% of total imports. These countries were followed by Lebanon, the Netherlands, Belgium and Portugal, which together accounted for a further 23%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Lebanon (with a CAGR of +86.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
