Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, roasted malt exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 310%. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Botswana (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) were the main destinations of roasted malt exports from South Africa, together comprising 74% of total exports. Swaziland, Namibia and Zambia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Swaziland (with a CAGR of +166.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 18% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Mozambique ($X per ton) and Zambia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Lesotho ($X per ton) and Botswana ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zambia (+4.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into South Africa
Roasted malt imports into South Africa surged to X tons in 2022, rising by 37% compared with the previous year. Overall, imports continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 75%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, roasted malt imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 109% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Belgium (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of roasted malt to South Africa, accounting for a 48% share of total imports. Moreover, roasted malt imports from Belgium exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X tons), threefold. The Netherlands (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Belgium stood at +15.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+44.5% per year) and the Netherlands (+20.6% per year).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+1.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
