The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, iron or steel sanitary ware exports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 12%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Botswana (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) were the main destinations of iron or steel sanitary ware exports from South Africa, with a combined 59% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Zimbabwe (with a CAGR of +8.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Botswana ($X), Namibia ($X) and Zimbabwe ($X) were the largest markets for iron or steel sanitary ware exported from South Africa worldwide, with a combined 47% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Zambia, Mozambique, Germany, Swaziland, Lesotho, Malawi and Democratic Republic of the Congo, which together accounted for a further 31%.
Germany, with a CAGR of +20.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for sanitary ware and parts of iron or steel stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 25% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+11.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into South Africa
After two years of decline, purchases abroad of sanitary ware and parts of iron or steel increased by 72% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports showed prominent growth. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, iron or steel sanitary ware imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest iron or steel sanitary ware supplier to South Africa, accounting for a 87% share of total imports. Moreover, iron or steel sanitary ware imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Hong Kong SAR (X tons), with a 2.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +6.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+32.8% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+11.1% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sanitary ware and parts of iron or steel to South Africa, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 5.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 3.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at +4.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+38.0% per year) and Italy (+1.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average import price for sanitary ware and parts of iron or steel stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 24%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
