In value terms, preserved sardines exports expanded notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Swaziland (X tons), Lesotho (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) were the main destinations of preserved sardines exports from South Africa, together comprising 73% of total exports. Botswana, Mauritius, Morocco and Zambia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Morocco (with a CAGR of +40.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 82% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, preserved sardines imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 65% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Thailand (X tons), China (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) were the main suppliers of preserved sardines imports to South Africa, with a combined 99% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +5.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, the largest preserved sardines suppliers to South Africa were Thailand ($X), China ($X) and Namibia ($X), with a combined 98% share of total imports.
