Lesotho (X tons) was the main destination for sausage exports from South Africa, with a 64% share of total exports. Moreover, sausage exports to Lesotho exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Mozambique (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Namibia (X tons), with an 8.8% share.

In value terms, Lesotho ($X) remains the key foreign market for sausages and similar products of meat exports from South Africa, comprising 57% of total exports. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, sausage imports expanded slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 48%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Italy (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of sausage to South Africa, accounting for a 74% share of total imports. Moreover, sausage imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Portugal (X tons), with a 1.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Italy stood at +8.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+1.5% per year) and Portugal (-15.0% per year).
In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sausages and similar products of meat to South Africa, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Portugal, with a 1.8% share.
