Over the period under review, total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +89.6% against 2013 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X units in 2021, and then reduced modestly in the following year.
In value terms, smart card imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of smart card to South Africa, with a 47% share of total imports. Moreover, smart card imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X units), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Singapore (X units), with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to +18.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+14.0% per year) and Singapore (+4.2% per year).

The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 9.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China stood at +14.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Singapore (+2.0% per year) and India (+4.0% per year).
