The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 123%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Swaziland (X tons) was the main destination for preserved sweet corn exports from South Africa, with a 59% share of total exports. Moreover, preserved sweet corn exports to Swaziland exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Namibia (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Botswana (X tons), with a 4.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Swaziland totaled +50.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Namibia (+12.7% per year) and Botswana (+8.3% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for preserved sweet corn exported from South Africa were Swaziland ($X), Namibia ($X) and Botswana ($X), together accounting for 81% of total exports.
Among the main countries of destination, Swaziland, with a CAGR of +56.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average preserved sweet corn export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -5.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 15% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Swaziland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into South Africa
In 2022, after two years of decline, there was growth in purchases abroad of sweet corn prepared or preserved, when their volume increased by less than 0.1% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, saw a significant curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 89% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, preserved sweet corn imports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a precipitous decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 78%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Thailand (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of preserved sweet corn to South Africa, accounting for a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, preserved sweet corn imports from Thailand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Cyprus (X tons), with a 4.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Thailand amounted to -24.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+79.7% per year) and Cyprus (+437.6% per year).
In value terms, Thailand ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sweet corn prepared or preserved to South Africa, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cyprus ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Thailand stood at -23.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Cyprus (+377.5% per year) and China (+87.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average preserved sweet corn import price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -2.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a slight slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average import price increased by 29% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cyprus ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+4.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
