In 2021, the South African wood kitchenware and tableware market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Botswana (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) were the main destinations of wood kitchenware and tableware exports from South Africa, with a combined 53% share of total exports. Swaziland, Zimbabwe, the United States, Mozambique, Lesotho and Malawi lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the United States (with a CAGR of +11.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X), Namibia ($X) and Botswana ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for wood kitchenware and tableware exported from South Africa worldwide, with a combined 64% share of total exports. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Swaziland (+9.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the amount of tableware and kitchenware of wood imported into South Africa soared to X tons, rising by 56% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports posted resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 81%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wood kitchenware and tableware imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine-year period. Indonesia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to +10.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+16.0% per year) and Indonesia (+1.2% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of tableware and kitchenware of wood to South Africa, comprising 81% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with an 8.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 1.5% share.
