In 2021, the South African tamping machinery market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 424% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tamping machinery imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 81%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest tamping machinery supplier to South Africa, accounting for a 89% share of total imports.
