In 2022, the South African test bench market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a perceptible expansion. Test bench consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, test bench exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate temperate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 289%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The United Arab Emirates (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) and Mozambique (X units) were the main destinations of test bench exports from South Africa, together comprising 44% of total exports. Lesotho, Madagascar, Namibia, Botswana, Saudi Arabia, Tanzania and Angola lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 47%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Madagascar (with a CAGR of +11.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) and Mozambique ($X) were the largest markets for test bench exported from South Africa worldwide, with a combined 44% share of total exports.

The average test bench export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, reducing by -10.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 309%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Angola ($X per unit) and Namibia ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Botswana ($X per unit) and Tanzania ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+74.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of test benches, when their volume increased by 57% to X units. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 78%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, test bench imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 130% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest test bench supplier to South Africa, accounting for a 48% share of total imports. Moreover, test bench imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Taiwan (Chinese) (X units), threefold. India (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled +1.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (+45.2% per year) and India (-16.3% per year).

The average test bench import price stood at $X per unit in 2022, dropping by -11.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 30%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while the price for Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
