There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malawi ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Namibia (+7.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into South Africa
In 2021, approx. X tons of tuna (prepared or preserved) were imported into South Africa; picking up by 26% compared with 2020. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 81% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, preserved tuna imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 96%. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Thailand (X tons) was the main preserved tuna supplier to South Africa, accounting for a 92% share of total imports. Moreover, preserved tuna imports from Thailand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Thailand totaled -1.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+14.2% per year) and Spain (+249.5% per year).
In value terms, Thailand ($X) constituted the largest supplier of tuna (prepared or preserved) to South Africa, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 5% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Thailand stood at -4.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+11.8% per year) and Spain (+211.8% per year).
