Japan (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the main destinations of vegetable product exports from South Africa, together accounting for 61% of total exports. The Netherlands, the United States, Poland, China, Botswana, Belgium and Sri Lanka lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Botswana (with a CAGR of +23.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Japan ($X) remains the key foreign market for vegetable products exports from South Africa, comprising 40% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by the United States, with a 6.6% share.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Botswana (+6.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into South Africa
In 2022, vegetable product imports into South Africa skyrocketed to X tons, increasing by 131% compared with the previous year. In general, imports posted a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 237% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, vegetable product imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of vegetable product to South Africa, with a 70% share of total imports. Moreover, vegetable product imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), threefold. India (X kg) ranked third in terms of total imports with less than 0.1% share.
