In 2021, the South African watch market was finally on the rise to reach $X after four years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a pronounced contraction. Watch consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the amount of watches exported from South Africa soared to X units, surging by 43% against the year before. In general, exports continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 52%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, watch exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports enjoyed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 84%. Hong Kong SAR (X units), Namibia (X units) and Botswana (X units) were the main destinations of watch exports from South Africa, with a combined 64% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Zambia, the United States, Switzerland, Swaziland, Mauritius, Cote d'Ivoire, Lesotho, Singapore, Angola and Tanzania, which together accounted for a further 30%.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 24% against the previous year.
