Botswana (X tons) was the main destination for wheat gluten exports from South Africa, accounting for a 58% share of total exports. Moreover, wheat gluten exports to Botswana exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Zambia (X tons), threefold. Zimbabwe (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Botswana amounted to +16.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Zambia (+20.6% per year) and Zimbabwe (-3.8% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for wheat gluten exported from South Africa were Botswana ($X), Zambia ($X) and Zimbabwe ($X), with a combined 91% share of total exports.
Among the main countries of destination, Zambia, with a CAGR of +15.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average wheat gluten export price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -22.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 71% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Swaziland (+4.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, the amount of wheat gluten imported into South Africa declined to X tons, waning by -14.7% on 2021 figures. In general, total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +30.9% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 54%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, wheat gluten imports rose significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +83.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
