Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Japan (X cubic meters) was the main destination for exports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates from South Africa, with a 63% share of total exports. Moreover, exports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates to Japan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, China (X cubic meters), twofold. Imports into South Africa
In 2021, supplies from abroad of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates decreased by -39.1% to X cubic meters, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports continue to indicate a noticeable slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 106%. Imports peaked at X cubic meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, imports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates expanded sharply to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 80%. Over the period under review, imports of attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X cubic meters) constituted the largest wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates supplier to South Africa, accounting for a 46% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Swaziland (X cubic meters), threefold. Namibia (X cubic meters) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Germany totaled +3.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Swaziland (-15.3% per year) and Namibia (-3.2% per year).
In value terms, the largest wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates suppliers to South Africa were Swaziland ($X), Namibia ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 79% share of total imports. France, the United States, Hungary, Portugal and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.
Portugal, with a CAGR of +275.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average import price for wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates stood at $X per cubic meter in 2021, jumping by 85% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 98%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per cubic meter), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+22.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
