Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs at X cubic meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, exports of wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates declined rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 310% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Botswana (X cubic meters) was the main destination for exports of wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates from South Africa, accounting for a 58% share of total exports. Moreover, exports of wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates to Botswana exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Saudi Arabia (X cubic meters), fourfold. Kuwait (X cubic meters) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Botswana totaled +13.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (+43.1% per year) and Kuwait (+75.9% per year).
In value terms, Botswana ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Kuwait ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates exported from South Africa worldwide, with a combined 72% share of total exports.
Among the main countries of destination, Kuwait, with a CAGR of +72.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average export price for wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates amounted to $X per cubic meter, rising by 3.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Zimbabwe ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Saudi Arabia (+10.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into South Africa
In 2021, supplies from abroad of wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates increased by 54% to X cubic meters, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports showed buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 91% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, imports of wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates declined to $X in 2021. In general, imports posted a perceptible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 34%. Imports peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell modestly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Namibia (X cubic meters) was the main supplier of wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates to South Africa, accounting for a 99% share of total imports. It was followed by Swaziland (X cubic meters), with a 0.4% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Namibia stood at +14.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Swaziland (-32.9% per year) and Germany (-33.3% per year).
In value terms, Namibia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates to South Africa, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Swaziland ($X), with a 12% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Namibia stood at +28.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Swaziland (-16.7% per year) and Germany (-9.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average import price for wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates stood at $X per thousand cubic meters in 2021, with a decrease of -37.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 51%. The import price peaked at $X per thousand cubic meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per thousand cubic meters), while the price for Namibia ($X per thousand cubic meters) was amongst the lowest.
