Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, worked flat glass exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 48%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Zimbabwe (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) were the main destinations of worked flat glass exports from South Africa, together accounting for 75% of total exports. These countries were followed by Swaziland, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique and Malawi, which together accounted for a further 23%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Swaziland (with a CAGR of +15.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for worked flat glass exported from South Africa were Zimbabwe ($X), Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) and Zambia ($X), together comprising 62% of total exports.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Namibia (+12.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into South Africa
In 2021, approx. X tons of worked flat glass were imported into South Africa; picking up by 31% compared with 2020. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 42%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, worked flat glass imports contracted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 39%. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Vietnam (X tons), China (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the main suppliers of worked flat glass imports to South Africa, with a combined 93% share of total imports. Turkey and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 4.6%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +87.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of worked flat glass to South Africa, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China amounted to -2.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+38.4% per year) and Thailand (-0.3% per year).
