The South African woolen yarn market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a deep downturn. After three years of growth, overseas shipments of yarn of wool decreased by -18.1% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 18%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then shrank notably in the following year.
In value terms, woolen yarn exports reached $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -3.3% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Germany (X tons) was the main destination for woolen yarn exports from South Africa, accounting for a 52% share of total exports. Moreover, woolen yarn exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the UK (X tons), with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany stood at +7.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (-3.7% per year) and the UK (+16.4% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for yarn of wool exports from South Africa, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the UK ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by the United States, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany amounted to +10.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+36.8% per year) and the United States (-0.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average woolen yarn export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 29% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+17.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into South Africa
In 2021, the amount of yarn of wool imported into South Africa skyrocketed to X tons, growing by 82% on 2020. Overall, imports saw a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 952% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, woolen yarn imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 544%. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Turkey (X tons) constituted the largest woolen yarn supplier to South Africa, with a 75% share of total imports. Moreover, woolen yarn imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Angola (X tons), with a 4.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Turkey totaled +17.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-4.1% per year) and Angola (0.0% per year).
In value terms, Turkey ($X), China ($X) and Austria ($X) appeared to be the largest woolen yarn suppliers to South Africa, together accounting for 92% of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, Austria, with a CAGR of +79.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average woolen yarn import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 4.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a perceptible slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the average import price increased by 61%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the price for Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+6.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
