Alums Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

The Southeast Asian alums market shrank to $X in 2022, reducing by -9% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, alums production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +7.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, exports of alums in South-Eastern Asia rose modestly to X tons, picking up by 3.5% on the previous year. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 86% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, alums exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 41%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Thailand was the major exporter of alums in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 61% of total exports in 2022. Malaysia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 34% share, followed by Vietnam (4.8%).

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +9.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Thailand ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Vietnam ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 97% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Thailand, with a CAGR of +6.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 14% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+1.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Alums Imports

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of alums, when their volume decreased by -8.9% to X tons. Total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +15.3% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 71%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, alums imports stood at $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 54%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

The Philippines was the largest importer of alums in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 47% of total imports in 2022. Myanmar (X tons) held a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Cambodia (17%) and Thailand (6.8%). Indonesia (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to alums imports into the Philippines stood at +3.8%. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+43.6%), Myanmar (+36.3%), Cambodia (+9.7%) and Thailand (+9.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lao People's Democratic Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +43.6% from 2012-2022. Indonesia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Malaysia (-7.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Myanmar (+19 p.p.), Cambodia (+6.4 p.p.), Thailand (+2.6 p.p.) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia saw its share reduced by -1.7%, -3.5% and -6.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, the Philippines ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported alums in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cambodia ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Myanmar, with an 11% share.

In the Philippines, alums imports expanded at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Cambodia (+5.6% per year) and Myanmar (+15.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 13% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
