Exports in South-Eastern Asia
In 2021, overseas shipments of apples were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Total exports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, apple exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild slump. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Thailand represented the key exporter of apples in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 54% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons), together mixing up a 41% share of total exports. Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to apple exports from Thailand stood at +11.0%. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+62.8%), Myanmar (+22.7%), Vietnam (+7.6%) and Malaysia (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lao People's Democratic Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +62.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Singapore (-7.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Thailand, Myanmar and Lao People's Democratic Republic increased by +30, +3.7 and +2.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Thailand ($X), Singapore ($X) and Malaysia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 94% of total exports. Vietnam, Myanmar and Lao People's Democratic Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 5.4%.
Among the main exporting countries, Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +58.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -26.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 38%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia
For the third consecutive year, South-Eastern Asia recorded growth in overseas purchases of apples, which increased by 1.5% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +74.7% against 2014 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, apple imports amounted to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +88.4% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 23%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The Philippines (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) represented roughly 92% of total imports in 2021. The following importers - Singapore (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons) - together made up 7.1% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Myanmar (with a CAGR of +27.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Indonesia ($X), the Philippines ($X) and Thailand ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 72% of total imports. Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore and Myanmar lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.
Among the main importing countries, Myanmar, with a CAGR of +15.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 5.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.0%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
