For the fourth consecutive year, South-Eastern Asia recorded growth in supplies from abroad of articles of asbestos-cement, of cellulose fibre-cement, which increased by 14% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +88.5% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 49%. Over the period under review, imports of attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, imports of articles of asbestos-cement, of cellulose fibre-cement surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 71%. Lao People's Democratic Republic represented the main importer of articles of asbestos-cement, of cellulose fibre-cement in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 49% of total imports in 2021. At the same time, Timor-Leste (+51.8%), Malaysia (+25.7%) and Vietnam (+16.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Timor-Leste emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +51.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Myanmar (-9.5%) and Cambodia (-12.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Lao People's Democratic Republic (+36 p.p.), Malaysia (+16 p.p.), Vietnam (+2.8 p.p.) and Timor-Leste (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Myanmar and Cambodia saw its share reduced by -14.2% and -42.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the largest articles of asbestos-cement, of cellulose fibre-cement importing markets in South-Eastern Asia were Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Vietnam ($X), together accounting for 42% of total imports. Cambodia, Myanmar and Timor-Leste lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 10%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Timor-Leste, with a CAGR of +34.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
