The Southeast Asian stationery market reduced slightly to $X in 2022, dropping by -4% against the previous year. Overall, consumption recorded a slight contraction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, stationery production reduced slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 9.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, overseas shipments of articles of stationery were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, stationery exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 11%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Indonesia represented the largest exporter of articles of stationery in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 56% of total exports in 2022. Vietnam (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 24% share, followed by Malaysia (16%). Thailand (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Indonesia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of articles of stationery. At the same time, Vietnam (+3.2%) and Thailand (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +3.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malaysia (-3.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Vietnam and Indonesia increased by +7.6 and +6.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest stationery supplying countries in South-Eastern Asia were Vietnam ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Malaysia ($X), with a combined 94% share of total exports.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +3.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -8.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 12%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+0.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, supplies from abroad of articles of stationery was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, recorded a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 40%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, stationery imports amounted to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Malaysia (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) represented the largest importers of articles of stationery in 2022, recording approx. 31% and 22% of total imports, respectively. Thailand (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Indonesia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons). All these countries together took near 41% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Malaysia (with a CAGR of +6.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest stationery importing markets in South-Eastern Asia were Malaysia ($X), Singapore ($X) and Thailand ($X), together accounting for 57% of total imports.

Malaysia, with a CAGR of +7.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. Import price indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, stationery import price increased by +77.8% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year.
