Avocado Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, the Southeast Asian avocado market decreased by -1.6% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, posted prominent growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Avocado Production in South-Eastern Asia

In value terms, avocado production rose to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, posted a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 111% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of avocado production was Indonesia (X tons), accounting for 75% of total volume. Moreover, avocado production in Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Vietnam (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Indonesia stood at +8.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Vietnam (+136.6% per year) and the Philippines (-0.5% per year).

In 2022, the average avocado yield in South-Eastern Asia shrank to X tons per ha, remaining stable against the previous year's figure. In general, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the yield increased by 20%. Over the period under review, the avocado yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of avocados production in South-Eastern Asia declined to X ha, dropping by -5.7% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area, however, showed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the harvested area increased by 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to avocado production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, the amount of avocados exported in South-Eastern Asia shrank notably to X tons, falling by -27.7% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 390% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, avocado exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 136%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

In 2022, the Philippines (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons) represented the key exporters of avocados in South-Eastern Asia, together making up 62% of total exports. Singapore (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Indonesia (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons). All these countries together held near 37% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Malaysia (with a CAGR of +55.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Philippines ($X) emerged as the largest avocado supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with a 25% share of total exports. It was followed by Myanmar, with an 8.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the Philippines totaled +61.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Singapore (+20.5% per year) and Myanmar (+48.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 84% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 152%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, supplies from abroad of avocados decreased by -12.2% to X tons for the first time since 2011, thus ending a ten-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, recorded a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 53%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, avocado imports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 42%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

Singapore (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) represented roughly 79% of total imports in 2022. Thailand (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Brunei Darussalam (7%).

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Brunei Darussalam (with a CAGR of +24.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Singapore ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Thailand ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 96% of total imports.

Malaysia, with a CAGR of +24.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 12%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
