The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +50.1% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine years. Thailand (X tons) took a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Lao People's Democratic Republic (9%), Malaysia (6.1%), Singapore (6.1%) and Myanmar (4.8%). Indonesia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into the Philippines increased at an average annual rate of +19.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+29.1%), Thailand (+25.7%), Myanmar (+19.2%) and Malaysia (+7.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lao People's Democratic Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +29.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Singapore (-11.4%) and Indonesia (-15.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the Philippines, Thailand, Lao People's Democratic Republic and Myanmar increased by +29, +16, +7.3 and +3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
