In value terms, agglomerated powder rod exports expanded notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a pronounced downturn. In 2021, Thailand (X tons) represented the key exporter of base metal wire and rods of agglomerated base powder, making up 69% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons) and Singapore (X tons), together constituting a 25% share of total exports. Vietnam (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

In Thailand, agglomerated powder rod exports contracted by an average annual rate of -2.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (-0.7% per year) and Malaysia (-1.1% per year).

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a noticeable reduction. In 2021, purchases abroad of base metal wire and rods of agglomerated base powder decreased by -10.2% to X tons, falling for the fifth year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 45%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, agglomerated powder rod imports expanded slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The Philippines represented the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 37% of total imports. Indonesia (X tons) took an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Thailand (18%) and Malaysia (14%). Vietnam (X tons), Myanmar (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to agglomerated powder rod imports into the Philippines stood at +10.5%. At the same time, Myanmar (+19.0%) and Thailand (+5.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +19.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Malaysia (-1.6%), Vietnam (-8.4%), Indonesia (-18.8%) and Singapore (-29.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia and Myanmar increased by +30, +12, +6.6 and +2.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest agglomerated powder rod importing markets in South-Eastern Asia were Thailand ($X), the Philippines ($X) and Malaysia ($X), together accounting for 71% of total imports.

The Philippines, with a CAGR of +19.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 15% against the previous year. In general, the import price enjoyed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
