Indonesia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the bauxite exports, with a CAGR of +4.4% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) also remains the largest bauxite supplier in South-Eastern Asia.

Bauxite imports totaled X tons in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 35%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bauxite imports expanded to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +96.0% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Thailand (X tons) was the main importer of bauxite, achieving 49% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons), together creating a 49% share of total imports.

Imports into Thailand decreased at an average annual rate of -3.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Indonesia (+18.7%), Vietnam (+7.3%) and Malaysia (+6.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +18.7% from 2012-2022. While the share of Malaysia (+9.3 p.p.), Vietnam (+8.5 p.p.) and Indonesia (+7.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Thailand (-24.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported bauxite in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 15% share.

In Thailand, bauxite imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+5.0% per year) and Vietnam (+6.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 2% against the previous year. Import price indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, bauxite import price increased by +5.0% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 37% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Thailand ($X per ton) and Malaysia ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) and Vietnam ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+4.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
