From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

The Philippines was the key exporter of black or coloured pencil leads in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports finishing at X units, which was near 43% of total exports in 2021. Indonesia (X units) held a 28% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Vietnam (26%). Malaysia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by the Philippines (with a CAGR of +17.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest coloured pencil lead supplying countries in South-Eastern Asia were Vietnam ($X), the Philippines ($X) and Indonesia ($X), with a combined 95% share of total exports.

The Philippines, with a CAGR of +20.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In 2021, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per unit, growing by 7% against the previous year. Export price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, coloured pencil lead export price decreased by -8.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 67%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

For the third year in a row, South-Eastern Asia recorded decline in overseas purchases of black or coloured pencil leads, which decreased by -15.5% to X units in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, coloured pencil lead imports shrank dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 48% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Vietnam was the main importing country with an import of about X units, which amounted to 65% of total imports. Indonesia (X units) took a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (5.5%). Myanmar (X units) and the Philippines (X units) held a minor share of total imports.

Vietnam was also the fastest-growing in terms of the black or coloured pencil leads imports, with a CAGR of +4.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the Philippines (+3.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Malaysia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Myanmar (-3.8%) and Indonesia (-10.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported black or coloured pencil leads in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 7.8% share.

In Vietnam, coloured pencil lead imports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Indonesia (-13.4% per year) and Malaysia (-9.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per unit in 2021, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible downturn.
