Blanket Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

The Southeast Asian blanket market expanded markedly to $X in 2022, with an increase of 6.9% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, blanket production shrank modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -9.0% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 46%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Blanket Exports

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

After three years of growth, shipments abroad of blankets and traveling rugs (except electric blankets) decreased by -23.4% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 70%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, blanket exports contracted notably to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +68.8% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

Vietnam was the key exporter of blankets and traveling rugs (except electric blankets) in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 52% of total exports in 2022. Thailand (X tons) held a 29% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Cambodia (14%). Indonesia (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +21.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest blanket supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cambodia ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 14% share.

In Vietnam, blanket exports increased at an average annual rate of +24.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cambodia (+13.2% per year) and Thailand (-6.1% per year).

In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 5.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 53%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+8.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Blanket Imports

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, purchases abroad of blankets and traveling rugs (except electric blankets) increased by 23% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, imports recorded strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 85% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, blanket imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 87%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Thailand (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) represented the major importers of blankets and traveling rugs (except electric blankets) in 2022, finishing at near 30% and 25% of total imports, respectively. Myanmar (X tons) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the Philippines (10%), Vietnam (7.1%), Malaysia (6.2%) and Singapore (5.1%).

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Myanmar (with a CAGR of +35.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Philippines ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Indonesia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 53% of total imports.

The Philippines, with a CAGR of +49.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
