In 2022, the Southeast Asian blueberry and cranberry market decreased by -19.5% to $X for the first time since 2011, thus ending a ten-year rising trend. Timor-Leste (X tons) remains the largest blueberry and cranberry producing country in South-Eastern Asia, comprising approx. 57% of total volume. Moreover, blueberry and cranberry production in Timor-Leste exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Vietnam (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Timor-Leste amounted to +1.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Vietnam (+0.7% per year) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+1.2% per year).

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, shipments abroad of blueberries and cranberries increased by 144% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports recorded strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 405%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, blueberry and cranberry exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 164%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Singapore dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 96% of total exports in 2022. Thailand (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Singapore was also the fastest-growing in terms of the blueberries and cranberries exports, with a CAGR of +26.9% from 2012 to 2022. Thailand (-11.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Singapore (+59 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Thailand saw its share reduced by -48.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) remains the largest blueberry and cranberry supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 2.5% share of total exports.

In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -33.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Thailand amounted to $X per ton.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, after ten years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of blueberries and cranberries, when their volume decreased by -17.3% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, showed a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

In value terms, blueberry and cranberry imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

Singapore was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 68% of total imports. Thailand (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 20% share, followed by Vietnam (9.3%). Indonesia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Singapore increased at an average annual rate of +15.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Vietnam (+60.3%), Thailand (+31.1%) and Indonesia (+28.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +60.3% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia increased by +14, +8.9 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported blueberries and cranberries in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 6.5% share.

In Singapore, blueberry and cranberry imports expanded at an average annual rate of +15.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (+35.4% per year) and Vietnam (+64.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 9% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 16%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
