Buckwheat Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

The Southeast Asian buckwheat market skyrocketed to $X in 2022, jumping by 31% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a perceptible decrease. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Buckwheat Production in South-Eastern Asia

In value terms, buckwheat production rose notably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 203%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of buckwheat production was Myanmar (X tons), accounting for 80% of total volume. Moreover, buckwheat production in Myanmar exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Vietnam (X tons), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Philippines (X tons), with a 6.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Myanmar amounted to +3.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Vietnam (+0.7% per year) and the Philippines (+1.3% per year).

Buckwheat Exports

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, the amount of buckwheat exported in South-Eastern Asia soared to X tons, jumping by 89% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 198% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, buckwheat exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable setback. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Myanmar (X tons) represented the major exporter of buckwheat, constituting 76% of total exports. Vietnam (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Singapore (5.6%). Malaysia (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to buckwheat exports from Myanmar stood at +4.9%. At the same time, Vietnam (+67.4%) and Singapore (+42.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +67.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malaysia (-25.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Myanmar (+46 p.p.), Vietnam (+15 p.p.) and Singapore (+5.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Malaysia (-35.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Myanmar ($X) remains the largest buckwheat supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 22% share.

In Myanmar, buckwheat exports contracted by an average annual rate of -1.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (+35.6% per year) and Vietnam (+50.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 27% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+7.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Buckwheat Imports

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, the amount of buckwheat imported in South-Eastern Asia surged to X tons, picking up by 120% compared with 2021 figures. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 902%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, buckwheat imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 389% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Thailand was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 71% of total imports. Malaysia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Singapore (9.2%) and Vietnam (5.2%). The Philippines (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to buckwheat imports into Thailand stood at +8.4%. At the same time, Vietnam (+71.2%), the Philippines (+15.4%) and Singapore (+7.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +71.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malaysia (-13.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Thailand (+62 p.p.), Singapore (+7.8 p.p.), Vietnam (+5.2 p.p.) and the Philippines (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Malaysia (-2.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Thailand ($X), Singapore ($X) and Malaysia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 92% share of total imports. Vietnam and the Philippines lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 6.7%.

Among the main importing countries, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +44.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -28.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate notable growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 133%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
