In 2021, the amount of carbon brushes exported in South-Eastern Asia shrank significantly to X tons, falling by -16.8% compared with the previous year. In general, exports, however, recorded a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 28%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, carbon brush exports reduced notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Thailand prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 80% of total exports in 2021. Vietnam (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 8.7% share, followed by Malaysia (5.2%). Singapore (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Thailand increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Malaysia (+8.4%), the Philippines (+8.3%) and Vietnam (+7.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malaysia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +8.4% from 2012-2021. Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Thailand (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Singapore (-3.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest carbon brush supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 7.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Thailand totaled +6.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Vietnam (+6.5% per year) and Singapore (+3.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -13.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 9.6% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+9.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2021, supplies from abroad of carbon brushes decreased by -6.7% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. Total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -29.9% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 32% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, carbon brush imports declined to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -20.0% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of carbon brushes, namely Vietnam, the Philippines and Thailand, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons), together constituting a 19% share of total imports. Singapore (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +16.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest carbon brush importing markets in South-Eastern Asia were Indonesia ($X), the Philippines ($X) and Vietnam ($X), together comprising 71% of total imports.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +10.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -7.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 17%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted in the following year.
