Exports in South-Eastern Asia
In 2022, shipments abroad of carbon dioxide increased by 5.2% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 42%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, carbon dioxide exports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 38%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The biggest shipments were from Singapore (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons), together amounting to 97% of total export. Vietnam (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +29.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, Singapore ($X) remains the largest carbon dioxide supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 19% share.
In Singapore, carbon dioxide exports increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (-5.2% per year) and Malaysia (-5.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 13% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (-0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia
In 2022, the amount of carbon dioxide imported in South-Eastern Asia declined to X tons, waning by -9.1% against the previous year. Overall, imports continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 45% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, carbon dioxide imports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Singapore was the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 50% of total imports. Indonesia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by the Philippines (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 48% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to carbon dioxide imports into Singapore stood at -1.3%. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+6.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lao People's Democratic Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +6.6% from 2012-2022. Indonesia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Philippines (-3.0%), Vietnam (-15.8%) and Malaysia (-17.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Singapore (+20 p.p.), Indonesia (+8.4 p.p.), Lao People's Democratic Republic (+5.5 p.p.) and the Philippines (+3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Vietnam (-9 p.p.) and Malaysia (-18.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported carbon dioxide in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with a 9.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 6.8% share.
In Singapore, carbon dioxide imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Indonesia (-9.5% per year) and Vietnam (-9.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 17% against the previous year. Import price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, carbon dioxide import price increased by +67.2% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 18%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
