Trailer And Semi-Trailer Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, the Southeast Asian trailer and semi-trailer market decreased by -1.3% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, trailer and semi-trailer production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, approx. X units of cargo trailers and semi-trailers were exported in South-Eastern Asia; falling by -28.9% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, exports saw a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 173%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, trailer and semi-trailer exports declined to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 474% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the three major exporters of cargo trailers and semi-trailers, namely Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia, represented more than two-thirds of total export. Malaysia (X units) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Vietnam (X units). All these countries together took near 20% share of total exports. Cambodia (X units) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Indonesia (with a CAGR of +12.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Thailand ($X), Singapore ($X) and Indonesia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 77% of total exports. Cambodia, Vietnam and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Cambodia, with a CAGR of +16.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per unit, surging by 27% against the previous year. In general, the export price enjoyed a pronounced expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 110%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cambodia ($X per unit), while Indonesia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cambodia (+12.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, overseas purchases of cargo trailers and semi-trailers decreased by -15.1% to X units, falling for the seventh year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports showed a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, trailer and semi-trailer imports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a pronounced increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 65%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of cargo trailers and semi-trailers, namely Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines, represented more than half of total import. Thailand (X units) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Singapore (X units), Lao People's Democratic Republic (X units) and Malaysia (X units). All these countries together held approx. 32% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of +14.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cargo trailers and semi-trailers in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Vietnam amounted to +16.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Singapore (-1.5% per year) and Thailand (+9.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per unit, waning by -2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 70%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per unit), while Indonesia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
