Cashew Nut Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

The Southeast Asian cashew nut market reduced rapidly to $X in 2021, shrinking by -45.6% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded noticeable growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Cashew Nut Production in South-Eastern Asia

In value terms, cashew nut production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 65% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Vietnam (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons), with a combined 86% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in the Philippines (with a CAGR of +7.3%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average cashew nut yield in South-Eastern Asia dropped to X kg per ha, falling by -2.7% compared with 2020. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 24%. The level of yield peaked at X kg per ha in 2020, and then shrank modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, approx. X ha of cashew nuts were harvested in South-Eastern Asia; with a decrease of -1.9% compared with the year before. In general, the harvested area recorded a mild setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the harvested area increased by 4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to cashew nut production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of cashew nuts decreased by -28.5% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cashew nut exports fell sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Indonesia dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 80% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), constituting a 9.8% share of total exports. Vietnam (X tons), Myanmar (X tons), Cambodia (X tons) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Indonesia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of cashew nuts. At the same time, Thailand (+108.7%), Lao People's Democratic Republic (+22.8%) and Myanmar (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +108.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Vietnam (-1.0%) and Cambodia (-28.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Indonesia (+16 p.p.), Thailand (+9.8 p.p.) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Cambodia saw its share reduced by -28.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) remains the largest cashew nut supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 5.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Indonesia was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (-2.8% per year) and Thailand (+93.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, falling by -7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a slight slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 19%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+0.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Cashew Nut Imports

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2021, cashew nut imports in South-Eastern Asia fell remarkably to X tons, declining by -71.8% against the year before. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 98%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cashew nut imports reduced notably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 82% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the one major importers of cashew nuts, namely Vietnam, represented more than two-thirds of total import.

Vietnam experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of cashew nuts. The shares of the largest importers remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cashew nuts in South-Eastern Asia.

In Vietnam, cashew nut imports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012-2021.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -8.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Vietnam.
