Cassava Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

The Southeast Asian cassava market declined slightly to $X in 2022, reducing by -3.2% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Cassava Production in South-Eastern Asia

In value terms, cassava production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Thailand (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons), with a combined 81% share of total production. Cambodia, Lao People's Democratic Republic and the Philippines lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of +10.9%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average cassava yield declined to X tons per ha in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the yield increased by 3.8% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the cassava yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of cassava were harvested in South-Eastern Asia; standing approx. at the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area showed a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 3.4%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, overseas shipments of cassava increased by 8.2% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cassava exports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a mild expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 69%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Thailand represented the largest exporter of cassava in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 87% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons), generating an 11% share of total exports. Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from Thailand increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+33.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lao People's Democratic Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +33.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Vietnam (-10.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Thailand and Lao People's Democratic Republic increased by +21 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest cassava supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X), with a 10% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Thailand amounted to +3.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Lao People's Democratic Republic (+42.8% per year) and Vietnam (-10.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 141%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cassava imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 226% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Thailand prevails in imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 97% of total imports in 2022. Vietnam (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cassava imports into Thailand stood at +18.0%. At the same time, Vietnam (+43.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +43.7% from 2012-2022. Vietnam (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Thailand saw its share reduced by -2.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cassava in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 22% share of total imports.

In Thailand, cassava imports increased at an average annual rate of +20.2% over the period from 2012-2022.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -15.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, enjoyed a measured expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 103%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Thailand stood at $X per ton.
