Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2021, the amount of chestnuts exported in South-Eastern Asia declined markedly to X tons, reducing by -50.2% against the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 805%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

In value terms, chestnut exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 123%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Malaysia was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 54% of total exports. Thailand (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 30% share, followed by Vietnam (14%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +81.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Thailand ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Vietnam ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 96% share of total exports.

Thailand, with a CAGR of +86.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 201% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible reduction. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+2.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

Chestnut imports rose significantly to X tons in 2021, growing by 13% compared with the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +42.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 26%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, chestnut imports totaled $X in 2021. Total imports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +63.8% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Vietnam (X tons) was the key importer of chestnuts, achieving 57% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), creating a 34% share of total imports. The following importers - the Philippines (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) - each recorded an 8.5% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Vietnam (with a CAGR of +78.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

In value terms, the largest chestnut importing markets in South-Eastern Asia were Vietnam ($X), Thailand ($X) and the Philippines ($X), together accounting for 95% of total imports.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +71.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -6.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 7.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Thailand ($X per ton) and Vietnam ($X per ton), while the Philippines ($X per ton) and Malaysia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (-0.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
