The Southeast Asian chick peas market rose slightly to $X in 2022, increasing by 3.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a noticeable shrinkage. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, chick peas production expanded modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a deep contraction. In 2022, overseas shipments of chick peas decreased by -15.7% to X tons, falling for the fourth year in a row after five years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw notable growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 848%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chick peas exports fell slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted notable growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 736% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of chick peas, namely Myanmar, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Myanmar was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chick peas exports, with a CAGR of +5.7% from 2012 to 2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Myanmar increased by +7.2 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Myanmar ($X) also remains the largest chick peas supplier in South-Eastern Asia.

Chick peas imports skyrocketed to X tons in 2022, with an increase of 24% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chick peas imports soared to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 56%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Malaysia (X tons) was the key importer of chick peas, making up 44% of total imports. Singapore (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 28% share, followed by Thailand (11%) and the Philippines (9.3%). The following importers - Vietnam (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) - each recorded a 5.5% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +30.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X), Singapore ($X) and Thailand ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 83% of total imports. The Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +29.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, waning by -2.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 18%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Singapore ($X per ton) and the Philippines ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) and Malaysia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+8.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
