Chicken Meat Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

The Southeast Asian chicken meat market contracted to $X in 2021, leveling off at the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Chicken Meat Production in South-Eastern Asia

In value terms, chicken meat production declined slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Indonesia (X tons) remains the largest chicken meat producing country in South-Eastern Asia, accounting for 35% of total volume. Moreover, chicken meat production in Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Thailand (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Malaysia (X tons), with a 14% share.

In Indonesia, chicken meat production expanded at an average annual rate of +9.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Thailand (+1.6% per year) and Malaysia (+2.7% per year).

The average chicken meat yield expanded modestly to X kg per head in 2021, increasing by 3.6% compared with the previous year. In general, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the yield increased by 5.4%. Over the period under review, the chicken meat yield reached the maximum level at X kg per head in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

The global number of animals slaughtered for chicken meat production totaled X heads in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against 2020. The total number of producing animals indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, number of animals slaughtered for chicken meat production decreased by -4.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 24%. The level of producing animals peaked at X heads in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, producing animals remained at a lower figure.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2021, exports of chicken meat in South-Eastern Asia expanded rapidly to X tons, increasing by 9.6% on 2020. Overall, exports recorded a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 59% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chicken meat exports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Thailand dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 86% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), constituting an 8.5% share of total exports. The following exporters - Vietnam (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) - together made up 5.3% of total exports.

Exports from Thailand increased at an average annual rate of +16.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+45.2%) and Singapore (+15.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +45.2% from 2012-2021. Malaysia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Thailand (+9.4 p.p.) and Vietnam (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Malaysia (-5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest chicken meat supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with a 6.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 1.8% share.

In Thailand, chicken meat exports increased at an average annual rate of +18.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Singapore (+14.8% per year) and Vietnam (+47.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -3.6% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 46%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

For the third consecutive year, South-Eastern Asia recorded decline in supplies from abroad of chicken meat, which decreased by -0.4% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -17.8% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 33%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chicken meat imports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the Philippines (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) represented the key importers of chicken meat in South-Eastern Asia, together resulting at approx. 68% of total imports. Singapore (X tons) held a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (10%). The following importers - Cambodia (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Timor-Leste (X tons) - each accounted for a 5.4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Cambodia (with a CAGR of +62.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Philippines ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Singapore ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 79% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Malaysia, Cambodia, Indonesia and Timor-Leste, which together accounted for a further 20%.

Among the main importing countries, Cambodia, with a CAGR of +53.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
