In 2022, the Southeast Asian pimenta pepper market increased by 1.5% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Thailand (X tons) remains the largest pimenta pepper producing country in South-Eastern Asia, accounting for 57% of total volume. Moreover, pimenta pepper production in Thailand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Myanmar (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Vietnam (X tons), with a 17% share.

In Thailand, pimenta pepper production expanded at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Myanmar (+0.9% per year) and Vietnam (+0.8% per year).

The average pimenta pepper yield fell to X tons per ha in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the yield increased by 17%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the pimenta pepper harvested area in South-Eastern Asia stood at X ha, stabilizing at the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 1% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

After ten years of growth, shipments abroad of pimenta pepper decreased by -50.1% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 44%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, pimenta pepper exports dropped sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 57%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

Exports by Country

Myanmar (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) were the key exporters of pimenta pepper in 2022, reaching approx. 42% and 35% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons), constituting a 17% share of total exports. The following exporters - Singapore (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) - together made up 4.9% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Myanmar (with a CAGR of +23.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Myanmar ($X), Thailand ($X) and Vietnam ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 89% share of total exports.

Myanmar, with a CAGR of +17.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -8.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a mild decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 31%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of pimenta pepper, when their volume decreased by -5.3% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 30%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pimenta pepper imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 39%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Thailand represented the largest importer of pimenta pepper in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 43% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons), together mixing up a 51% share of total imports. Singapore (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Indonesia (with a CAGR of +10.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Thailand ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Indonesia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 93% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Indonesia, with a CAGR of +21.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 22% against the previous year. Import price indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pimenta pepper import price increased by +102.1% against 2013 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 23% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
